Forty-five years ago this week, my husband took me out for a birthday dinner–my first birthday after we began dating. We went to a wonderful restaurant in Palo Alto, California, where we were going to law school. We ordered wine – it was my 21st birthday, and I was finally legal. (Well, I’d been legal in Vermont where I lived when I was 18, but I was finally legal everywhere.)
I don’t recall what I had for the entrée, though I’m sure it was good – it was a fabulous restraurant.
But I do recall the dessert – Strawberries Romanoff, a confection of fresh strawberries and whipped cream soaked in triple sec liqueur. I’m not sure I’ve ever had better strawberries. I can taste them still – the berries and cream so sweet they melted in my mouth, and the alcohol burning a slow warm path to my belly.
What’s the best dessert you’ve ever had?

The best dessert I ever had was in Frankfort Germany. I accompanied my husband on a business trip, while he was working, I took a short barge trip past hillside vineyards and castles. The tour stopped and had ice wine in a cave. We ate at our hotel that evening and for desert the chef presented me with a marzipan forest of trees and woodland creatures. Magical and delicious.
Kitty,
Marzipan is always delicious. Thanks for visiting this site.
